The Tern HSD has been a shop favorite since its introduction in 2019. We’ve seen them used for city commuting, kid hauling, and even trail maintenance in DC. So when Tern announced their new version for 2026, we wanted to see what updates could make this compact cargo bike even more capable.

The Gen 3 HSD offers:

• Increased cargo and overall capacity (176lb cargo, 419lb gross vehicle weight)

• Updated Gen5 Bosch Performance Line and Sport motors with up to 600% assist

• New drivetrain options with electronic shifting and automatic shifting

• Safety and security features from Bosch and Tern

Updated Geometry

The new HSD Gen 3 is overall slightly longer, with a wider wheelbase, lower standover height, and higher handlebar position. Combined, these features make the new HSD more stable, easier to mount, and more comfortable to ride, for a wider rage of heights. The frame and improved quick release seatpost allows riders from 4’11”-6’9″ to share the same bike. The HSD’s longer wheelbase improves the ride feel and stability, especially when loaded with cargo.

More Power

The new Gen 3 HSD is one of the first bikes we’ve seen to feature the all-new Gen 5 Performance Line PX from Bosch. These motors produce more power (90Nm), run more quietly, and are more lightweight. Features like electronic shifting, hill-hold, and optional GPS tracking increase rider safety and confidence.

New Drivetrains

We’ve seen a Tern HSD with electronic shifting before, with the original S+, but the new drivetrains offered on the S9i Sport and P10e Sport take that concept further. The 3X3 internally geared nine speed hub with over 500% range, is matched to a Gates belt drive, and shifts flawlessly under load. It’s controlled by a wireless shift pod on the bars. The TRP EASI 10 speed derailleur offers manual or automatic shifting on a conventional chain drive system. Both systems are wired into the motor, providing power wherever you go.

Increased Capacity

The HSD’s frame and fork were tested under the EN 17860 standard to a capacity of 419 pounds. The rear rack supports 176 pounds, enough to take an adult passenger.

Certified Safe and Secure

All of Bosch’s components are UL Certified for safe storage and operation of the HSD e-bike. Batteries and other components have been tested in a variety of real world conditions.

Activation of the SmartSystem’s Connect Module (S9i only) allows the rider to use their display as a digital key, locking the bike’s motor and battery. If stolen, the bike is capable of being tracked using the GPS enabled module.
