March 2021 Update

COVID-19 Procedures:

class=”s1″>With expanded guidance related to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have modified our operations to keep our staff and customers safe. While we previously operated in a “zero-contact” manner, we are allowing brief interactions with customers outside. We require masks to be worn when interacting with our staff outside.

Please call or text when arriving.

The effects of the 2020 bike boom in the US has bike shops and manufacturers trying hard to meet demand. We’re being told by several distributors that our 2021 bike orders cannot be completely fulfilled.

Schedule a repair by email or phone call:

If you need to get your bike tuned, this month is the beginning of our busy season. Our current repair calendar is about one week long. This will increase as soon as weather is above 60 degrees. We know it is getting nice out and you want to ride this weekend, but everyone else saw the sun at the same time. Please call or email for an appointment. If we’re out of the shop or not answering, the phone number is text enabled. We check voicemail when we can, but please know we’re more responsive by text.

We will accept limited small repairs for minor issues such as flat tires and adjustments at the beginning of our day. We simply don’t have adequate staffing for the current level of demand. Which brings us to…

Now Hiring:

Want to join the team that made us the Washington City Paper’s “Best Place to Get Your Bike Fixed” for 2020? We’re looking for exceptional customer service professionals and skilled mechanics that will keep our customers riding. If you have experience in retail and want to share your love of city cycling, drop us a line at jobs@thedailyriderdc.com with a resume and cover letter. Already a bike mechanic? We know you’re in demand at the moment, so feel free to see if our shop environment might be a welcome change of pace.

 March 2021 Bike Arrivals:

We’re anticipating some models from Fuji and Breezer in April, so check back here then.

New Restock (Updated 3/28/21) Fairdale Lookfar:

Kowabunga Green Fairdale LookfarThe Fairdale Lookfar ($564) has returned to our shop. This has all the essentials that make a great city bike. The Lookfar keeps it simple with a 1×8 drivetrain and caliper brakes. Equip it for a commute by adding a rack and fenders, or keep it light and simple for afternoon fitness rides.

We have limited quantities of these and will not likely receive additional inventory in 2021. We’ll update availability here as supply levels change. Update for 3/28: Only medium models remain in stock.

The Fairdale Express ($499) takes the already simple Lookfar a step further. This singlespeed model is now available in small/medium. If you’re looking for basic transportation with low maintenance, this is your ride.

A small number of Breezer Midtown models remain in stock. Please call for size and model availability. These city oriented hybrids balance a sturdy build with an athletic position for a great all-rounder.

A limited number of 48cm Breezer Downtown EX models just landed (3/26) and are likely to not last long. This upright town bike is well suited for utility or casual riding and comes equipped with rack and fenders.

Marin Kid’s Bikes (Updated 3/28):

A blue Marin Donky Jr. in 24" size

Marin Donky Jr. 24″

Marin Donky Jr. 20

The Marin Donky 16″, 20″, and 24″ bikes arrived in December and we have a selection in our front window. These lightweight, aluminum-framed bikes all come with hand brakes. The 20″ and 24″ models have a 6 speed drivetrain for family rides that include hills or keeping up with parents and older siblings.

Our selection of electric cargo bikes is decent for the moment, but we are seeing stock shortages there as well in certain sizes. If you’re looking for an electric Yuba Supermarché,we have one remaining in stock that is nicely equipped for passenger carrying duties.

If you were looking for a Tern HSD, we now have the S+ in stock which when we first rode it changed our perception of biking.

BICYCLE PARTS SHORTAGES

The industry-wide shortage of parts extends beyond our borders. Our bike vendors have told us they’re having trouble getting parts for bikes on the production line, leading to further delays. For us as a local shop, this means we will also experience limited inventory throughout 2021. This will cause repair delays, and restrict our ability to fix certain issues. Common parts like tires and derailleurs will be in short supply for the next 18 months until manufacturers can replenish the supply.

This month, small repairs for minor issues such as flat tires and adjustments can usually be handled on the same day as drop-off.

New 2021 Bike Arrivals:

At this point in the year we’re being informed by several of our suppliers that inventories will be short this year. Price increases have been announced for multiple brands due to shipping and logistical challenges. The new Tern GSD v.2 is one of the bikes that will experience a price increase and limited inventory. If you are interested in getting on the list for one of these, please email us to add your name.

BICYCLE PARTS SHORTAGES

In 2020 our entire industry saw incredible demand for parts and accessories. So many people are taking their old bikes out of storage and riding them. This is great! But it wasn’t anticipated, and our distributors stocked for a normal year. These parts are starting to arrive back in stock, but supplies are limited, so we’re having to compete with every other shop in the US to get at this supply. If you have called another bike store looking for a certain part and they’re out of stock, we are likely out as well. Common parts that we are currently out of and cannot order are:

  • 26″ tubes in presta valve
  • 26″ tires
  • 29″ tubes

2021 Shop FAQ related to COVID

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (2020 version)

This FAQ came about during the first COVID outbreak, and as of August 2021 is no longer valid. We accept masked customers in the shop, and provide monthly updates on our blog.

Mostly, we’re keeping this up for historical reference.

Q: Can I come inside the shop to show you a problem my bike is having or to take a look at your bike selection?

A: Unfortunately, we’re not allowing anyone inside the shop except employees or delivery personnel, but we’re able to discuss your problem by phone or provide guidance by text or email. We can take a brief look at your bike outside the shop if you give us a call before coming.

This is a great time to learn about working on your own bike. This series of videos by Park Tool is a great starting point for step by step instructions to common repairs.

Q: So, are you open?

A: We’re working on bikes and taking sales requests by phone, but no customer has been inside of our shop since March.

Q: Do you have any bikes in stock?

A: As we mention above, we have models from several brands available, but this can change rapidly.

Q: When will the bike that I see on your site be in stock?

A:  The Marin Fairfax 1 is in stock now. Fairdale has not given us any estimate on their 2021 plans. Fuji has started shipping us some models but we are not guaranteed quantities or selection.

Q: Can I test ride a bike you have in stock?

A: You can test ride a bike we have in stock by making an appointment with us. Please call or email to set that up. We’ll need to make sure the bike is assembled and ready to ride. Bring your ID and credit card to hand off at the door.

Q: Can I purchase a tube, or other small item from you?

A: Absolutely! We’re taking orders by phone or text (the shop number is text enabled) and put items for pickup outside on the white table by the door.

Q: How does the repair drop-off and pickup procedure work?

On the day of your appointment or the day before, we’ll reach out by text to let you know we’re ready to accept your bike for repair.

Q: How long will you have my bike?

Usually, we like to get your bike back on the day of your appointment, but with this new arrangement we’re not able to assess the condition of bikes prior to doing the repair. Sometimes we discover issues that require parts that we don’t have on hand and need to order. Often, we find things that you may not have seen or noticed. We’ll point them out to you and provide an estimate. Our current turn-around time is between 1-5 days of drop off.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Can I come inside the shop to show you a problem my bike is having or to take a look at your bike selection?

A: Unfortunately, we’re not allowing anyone inside the shop except employees or delivery personnel, but we’re able to discuss your problem by phone or provide guidance by text or email.

A:  The Marin Fairfax line will not return to our shop until mid-October. We do not have accurate estimates for most other models from brands like Fairdale .

We will ask you to give us some advance notification so that we can assign one of our combination chain locks to you. They are located outside of the shop and are locked onto the public bike racks next to the curb. Lock up your bike and walk away. We’ll retrieve it within minutes and take it inside for the repair.

September Update

We continue to operate as a “zero-contact” shop with the procedures we have outlined here. We cannot provide an estimated date when we will reopen for walk-in sales and service.

The effects of the bike boom in the US has bike shops and manufacturers trying hard to keep up. We’re in the same situation and are taking steps to ensure that we can complete the repairs we currently have.

Schedule a repair by email or phone call:

Our current first available repair date is now three weeks out. Please call or email for an appointment. All major repairs are being scheduled in this manner. We have begun to offer limited day-of repairs for minor issues. We take them each day on a first-call(or email), first-serve basis. These will be accepted until we reach capacity (usually before 11:30AM) and are generally completed the same day.

BIKE AVAILABILITY (Updated September 19th)

Our inventory of bikes is limited but as of this writing (September 5th) we have received an allotment of Fuji Absolute 1.9  in all sizes. We are now out of stock of the Fuji Absolute 1.9 (September 19th). Please call or email for a test ride appointment. We have also received some Fuji Nevada 1.9   and Fuji Adventures which while mountain bikes, can handle city riding well, especially with the addition of slick tires. The models pictured on the Fuji site are prior year models so paint colors have changed somewhat. See our Instagram page for the actual bikes we have in stock. We have some bikes from Biria (Citibike Stepthrough 8) arriving in the coming weeks.

Our selection of electric cargo bikes is decent for the moment, but we are seeing stock shortages there as well in certain sizes.

BICYCLE PARTS SHORTAGES

This year our entire industry has seen incredible demand for parts and accessories. So many people are taking their old bikes out of storage and riding them. This is great! But it wasn’t anticipated, and our distributors stocked for a normal year. If you have called another bike store looking for a certain part and they’re out of stock, we are likely out as well. Common parts that we are currently out of and cannot order are:

  • 26″ tubes
  • 26″ tires
  • 7, 8, and 9 speed drivetrain parts (cassettes, freewheels, chainrings)
  • 7, 8, and 9 speed shifters and derailleurs
  • some basic home repair tools
  • some repair grade wheels

A: Like many shops in the area, hybrids are almost completely out of stock. We have a small selection of other bikes that are either in smaller sizes, or the last of their model. As of the date of this post (07/7/20) we still have several Marin Lombard 1 (54 or 56cm $899) that are a great city/road style for longer commutes and recreational riding. Considering a light tour? Take a look at the Lombard.

Q: When will the bike that I see on your site be in stock?

June Update

We continue to operate as a contactless shop with the procedures we have outlined here. We cannot provide an estimated date when we will reopen for walk-in sales and service.

Repair Intake Temporarily Paused

Our calendar of repairs has extended out beyond three weeks and we have made the unusual decision to momentarily halt new repair intake. We will post an update once we are able to schedule new repairs. We want to ensure that all currently scheduled repairs can be completed with the high standards we usually want to uphold.

Bike Availability

Our inventory of bikes has also become extremely limited. We’ll be putting out selections of bikes we have in stock daily on social media to show what we have in stock. We still have the Fairdale Lookfar in small and medium sizes. We anticipate arrival of large sizes by August.

Our selection of electric cargo bikes is decent for the moment, but we are seeing stock shortages there as well in certain sizes.
